Amsterdam — Path-Traced 3D City Map · Framed Matte Poster
Every building in this map is real. The roofs come from 3D BAG, the Dutch national LoD2.2 building model built by TU Delft — 158,211 surveyed roof surfaces inside a two-kilometre disc, each one a measured plane rather than a box with a guessed height. They stand on AHN4, the Netherlands' half-metre laser-scanned terrain model. The light is not a filter: the whole city was path traced, the same technique film studios use, with the shadows computed ray by ray from a sun standing 60° above the horizon.
What that buys you is Amsterdam's real grain. The canal belt reads as a set of concentric arcs because that is what it is, and the gabled seventeenth-century blocks along the Herengracht and Keizersgracht sit a storey or two below the nineteenth-century fabric behind them — you can see the step. The IJ opens the top of the disc. This is the flattest city in the series, 14.9 metres of relief across four kilometres, so nothing here is terrain doing the work: every block casts the shadow its true height earns.
